sustained read/writes

Does anybody know what does the term "sustained" read/write means? I have seen this metrics in reviews of hard drives but really not sure what does it mean?

AFAIU, sustained is the opposite to "bursts". With I/O operations buffered and the position of the heads being random, you can get pretty good speeds on very short reads and writes on very small amounts of data. But if you want a real statistical measurement of your HD performance, you should look at it for a prologned period of time and the average of several random reads or writes.
I might be wrong, though.

Hmm so does that mean the sequential read/writes are same as sustained read/writes?

Also, how is a typical sustained read/write measured? Do they take a large file and copy it on a hard drive and measure the speed?
