Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

SuSE 9 Pro sound card locks entire computer

When the installation of my Suse distro gets to the sound card it locks the entire computer. I have to power it down. Then when booting up it locked when it tried to load the sound card. I had to go into failsafe and delete everything relating to sound in modules.conf. Then it booted fine. The sound card is detected correctly as 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio Controller.

This sound card works with linux when I boot a live CD distro and also on the other operating system on my hard disk(Windows XP).

I have tried ALSA and YaST to configure it and both bring the system to a screeching halt every time and I have to edit modules.conf to boot into KDE again.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
