Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

SuSE 9 HDD Bum Out [BIOS? ver 4.5]

Not quite the best place to ask, but I may be able to get someone to give me a plain english answer.

I run an oooold machine (p233 clocked to 500) that unshockingly runs and old BIOS.
I have a Maxtor 6.4Gb Hard Drive on Primary Master [HDA?]that has my 2000 Pro boot on, (something I need to live with due to doing an MCSE) and a 40Gb Segate ST340810A 40Gb Hdd running on Secondary Master [HDC?]. Windows 2000 is taking up a full 6.4Gb on the Small Maxtor, and I had a FULL size (well 38Gb) Partition on the Seaget Drive using FAT32.

I KNOW there is an Issue with the BIOS hanging on Post due to the size of the disk being to damn big for it, but if I tell the main BIOS that the drive is in fact not installed, windows 2000 picks it up and can (and will) run it at top size.

So I downloaded the bootable ISO for SuSE 9.0 ran that and installeds using the default settings.
Waited 4 hours for the files to download and install, rebooted and got a simple line:
Grub hard disk error

tryed again with LILO and got
L01 01 01 etc etc etc

I figure this has something to do with the way I set partitions for SuSE.
I used PQMagic 8 to drop the Data drive on the seagate to 10Gb, then left the rest unallocated.
Suse then made a 1.01Gb Swap partition, and set the rest as Resier, and as there is data beyond the BIOS limitation I think this is buggering it up.

Can anyone explain a nice simple way to get this damn intall to go?
Or shall I just wait till me ney P3 800 turns up after christmas?

Feel free to post here, or drop an email if you prefer:

Look at the manufacturers website maybe they still have a bios update for
your mainboard, that allows for hd 's bigger than 32 Gb.

Or Look at the jumpersettings on your harddrive, sometime there's a
setting that limits your drive to 32Gb, that way you only loose 8Gb.

It's also possible to download "Drive Overlay Software" from some of
the manufacturers but i don't know if it works with Linux or win 2k, I
think the programs were made for win9x.

Good luck
