SuSE 10.1 - text is almost unreadable with i815

Brand new to linux. No really. I don't know anything. That being said...

Installed SuSE 10.1 on an old Dell box with integrated Intel i815 video. The great news is that it works. The bad news is that it looks like crap, so much so that the text is nearly unreadable. Everything is tall and skinny.

I've changed the resolution in YaST, but then I get a prompt saying something to the effect of "your modifications will be started the next time the graphics system is restarted. Exit SeX2 now?" (I think that is what it says.)

I don't know how to restart my graphics system yet, so I just reboot. I can't tell if I am making progress or not.

Thanks for reading. Any advice is much appreciated.

The monitor is a Dell 1907FP that keeps auto adjusting itself everytime I mess with the resolution.

I can't tell if that is helping me or not.
