Stuttering sound in Ubuntu - was fine

Hi,
Maybe one of you guys might have had this issue before. I have Guty Ubuntu and I was able to listen to mp3 files perfectly in Totem player before. Now I have stuttering sound when I listen to them. Videos with sound are fine. I tried removing the mpeg1-3layer codecs and reinstalling - Totem asked for the cd and installed them. Upon restarting - pauses were still there. Is there anyway I could avoid a reinstall - short of removing every codec to find which one is it causing the issue?

Hey, are you using totem-gstreamer or totem-xine (backends)? (check in package manager) try changing to totem-xine if you're using totem-gstreamer.

Ok, thanks I'll check that out. I use the frontend. Another clue is that mikmod in the backend can take 3mins before start playing a mod. I know that sounds crazy, I had assumed that crashed (stuck at the mikmod help that appears when it runs) but it started eventually.

Interesting I did a clean install of Dapper Drake and I find now I get stuttering sound only at the login - you know the drum sound - this repeats (echos) maybe 2-3 times. Only other place I notice this is on mikmod when I press Q to quit. The song playing quits only after stuttering the current song segment 3-4 times.
This is very strange as it is a clean re-install. The soundcard is a soundblaster live and is fine in windows. It was also find during the first ubuntu Dapper drake install I did. I did the reinstall to check if it was one if the codecs I had choosen. Obviously not the codec when I booted up the installer cd as I heard the login stutter. Anyone else having sound stutters? Generally not a problem, only at login/logout or when playing mikmod - when exiting.
