SSD Raid Necessary?

I have a question about SSD. I've been using them, various brands like Crucial Sandisk, Samsung. Do you think it's necessary, or worth having them in RAID arrays (mirrored) for redundancy since there's no moving parts and they're apparently a lot more versatile, safer than traditional drives? I ask because I'm thinking, if that's the case why spend another $500 for a mirrored 1TB SSD for example, plus cost of hardware RAID on top and the bit of performance that's sacrificed when in a RAID array.

Your thoughts please? This is for running Linux, web hosting environment or VPS hosting environment like OVZ, KVM for example.

Thanks for your feedback.

I think ssd's are fast. Not a real believer that they are as secure (data wise) as some enterprise level hard drives are.

In any question on this you have to consider one or more choices too. Advanced file system support may offer an advantage like ZFS and BTRFS and maybe even LVM ideas.

If you are using software raid you could consider a mechanical and ssd option. http://unix.stackexchange.com/questi...-mechanical-hd

In all of this there is no substitute for making and testing one or more disaster repair means. Some backup or rsync or such.

In all your choices, only you can decide. There is no right or wrong way. Your entire system is part of this question.
