Spontaneous System Power Failure
Dear All,
A workstation in our lab transiently powers off, about once a week.
We have changed UPS's, to no avail.
Before we send it to our contractor for piecewise replacement of power-related hardware, I want to check for alternative suggestions.
Two syslog files follow this summary, one from 4-21 and one from 4-26. The last entries before the power-offs start with the lines
"Apr 21 11:49:32 skadi anacron[26745]: Anacron 2.3 started on 2010-04-21"
and
"Apr 26 10:16:39 skadi anacron[10633]: Anacron 2.3 started on 2010-04-26"
In both cases, the user 'blake' was logged in at the time of the crash (see 'last' below).
I copied /var/log after both crashes, and can give any other log information therein that might be helpful. Also, added below are crontab and anacrontab.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't see any problems there. After the user blake experiences a crash, the last log has no entries until 12:11 when there is a boot. That is to say, the last login entry is at 10:05 which was a remote login. The system stays up until 11:26 on the 26th April.
Anacron runs to clean up any cron jobs that may not have been run at the correct time because for instance the computer was shut down.
The only power related things in those logs is a managed sleep or suspend, which is what takes place and finishes at 11:26 on the 26th April. So I would check the power saving options on the machine before replacing any hardware.
