Thanks for the replies.

Hmm interesting. Is the 2.6 kernel stable now? If it is maybe I will try compiling it. But how do I go about this? Maybe I should try this patch first. Where can I get this patch anyway?

Well that's a philosophical question. Each kernel release is stable, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have bugs in it. If you don't want to come across new bugs, don't upgrade your kernel. If you want to get fixes for bugs in an old kernel, Try a new kernel...

Theres plenty about compiling a kernel here on good old LinuxQuestions . There are details of the kernel options you need to get the speedtouch working here

Sorry, I think I must have imagined it, I did look but couldn't find what I thought I read, I wasn't really paying attention. It's been more than a year since I used a 2.4 kernel.

Heh, thanks for that Andrew.

I think there was an option to use the 2.6 kernel when I installed Slackware 10.1, so I'll do a clean install of it. Is there anything I need to know before I try installing Slackware with 2.6?
