Speaker problem

My speakers haven't worked since I installed linux a few days ago. I'm running Mandrake 9.1 and KDE. It's not the sound card because it is reading that and the speakers worked before and then I reinstalled it and they don't work anymore. I don't know what it is or how I can fix it. Keep in mind that I am a complete newb and know very little about linux, though I do learn quick.

Turn up the volume.

You must have a sound mixer button in one of the many menus. Use it.
