Hi,
I have Mandrake 9.1installed and have my sound card configured, well almost....
Mp3s are playing without any problem. Regarding audio CDs, I have the required cdread plugin installed (I use xmms for audio). However, the sound quality for CDs is horrible. I don't know why. I mean, I can definitely listen to audio CDs, but there is too much disturbance. So, I was thinking if trying and using the onboard ALSA drivers will improve the quality. When I run the command 'draksound', this is the message I get :
The "" driver for your card is unlisted.
Does that mean my sound card (Soundblaster Live! 5.1, ships along with Dell desktops) is not supported under ALSA, on mandrake 9.1 ? I remember reading in a different newsgroup about this user who had the same sound card and had it up and running using ALSA. Of course, he was using Mandrake 9.2.
OSS sound modules can be crap. Also, xmms doesn't necessarily play CDs through the cable connecting your CD-ROM and your soundcard. It has a plugin that will play it regardless. SO, yes, ALSA drivers will most probably get rid of the crappy sound quality.

You can get the latest source [url=www.alsa-project.org]here[/url[.
