sound is not working properly on debian testing(squeeze)

I recently installed testing on my laptop where i was formerly running lenny. sound worked properly upon the first boot, on the second boot there was a debian setup menu or something where it allowed me to keep the current kde3 settings (which is weird because this was a clean install, not an upgrade) or use default kde4 settings and I chose that with a backup of the kde3 settings---now whenever i boot it says "HDA ... not working, reverting to pulseaudio" where ... is the name of the sound...So is there anyway to get sound to work or to revert back to the "backed up" kde3 settings which were no different than these settings except for the sound???

what error does 'modprobe snd_hda_intel' produce?
Maybe run depmod & ldconfig first
