Sound card suggestions for music jukebox

Hey guys!

I've got a music jukebox plugged into my Hi-fi. I salvaged all the parts from old machines and cheap junk off eBay. The sound card it uses is archaic (so it sounds terrible) and I was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction of a good quality sound card, that's reasonably priced, works on Linux and is available in the UK.

I have looked at the compatibility lists but that gives no indication of what they sound like .

Another point to make is the machine is a 350MHz PII with a mere 64MB of RAM, works great for the task but I don't know if newer cards will need a bit more juice to work off (just going off what my main rigs soundcard's box says, which is significantly more powerful hardware than this machine has!)

Thanks in advance
Xzi

Sounds like you are going to go the inexpensive route, but once upon a time I read about a sound card that had a vacuum tube on it. I've kept it in the back of my mind since, just in case I ever get around to building my own audio only box. It's probably expensive, and if you are playing mp3's or other compressed formats, I don't think a quality card will matter much. I've always used cheaper cards, and never had any problems with drivers or audio quality. I'm not much of an audiophile though, and I'm usually playing a compressed format anyway.

Best of luck...

The jukebox plays FLACs and Ogg Vorbis tracks depending on where I got them. I dislike the sound from an MP3 lol. I conducted some tests using a more modern integrated sound card on a laptop and it was such a difference compared to the sound card I'm using.

In my main PC I use a Creative X-Fi Xtreme Music, which is the reason I'm having problems choosing a card. Under Windows my card sounds fantastic but due to the shakey beta 64bit Linux driver it sounds awful on Linux. I would have just gone with the inexpensive X-Fi card, but theres no chance it will work on this 32bit machine .

So I really need some advice about what cards people have had good experience with.
Thanks for your post
