Sound card recognized but no sound

I've installed Slackware 10.1 with the 2.6.10 kernel upgrade. I had some sound problems to start with (only having soundcore.ko) but installing alsa-driver fixed that. The problem I have now is this; the sound card is recognized and the snd-via82xx modukle is loaded etc...BUT when I cannot hear any of the sound that the computer is apparently producing. All my speakers are plugged in and alsamixer is set correctly and not muted. I really don't know what to do!
Help much appreciated!

Yeah, I read it and tried installing OSS like you suggested, but to no avail!
Thanks anyway

On alsa's web site they have chip specific instructions for setting up your sound card. Have you
read them yet? What kind of sound card do you have btw? Its aslo inevitable that someone will ask you to include a "lsmod" and a "lspci -v" in this thread , so you might as well get that done ;-)
Good luck

I've got a via82xx onbaord card with AC'97 audio, apparently.
I'm in the process of compiling the vanilla 2.6.10 kernel from kernel.org to se if that makes any difference. Someone in a different thread said that this problem is an issue with the 2.6.10 kernel package provided on the slack 10.1 cd. I'll let you know how it goes...

Well, installing the new kernel from source didn't help at all. This could have been because I didn't do it very carfully and I still had the slack cd 2.6.10 kernel installed, though. I've reinstalled slack 10.1 with the 2.4 kernel now and the sound still doesn't work. I think I'll try installing the 2.6.10 kernel from source again.
