No, you do not need to re-compile the kernel. You just need to download ALSA, compile it, and install it. Make sure you have soundcore module (driver) or else ALSA will not compile. The the bash screen or terminal type 'find / -name 'soundcore*' 2>/dev/null'. If it comes up with something similar to soundcore.o, you can install ALSA with out any problems. Make sure you have the compiler and kernel source code.

This could probably mean the module is already loaded and being used. Run lsmod to find the module. If you found it, run aumix to set the mixer settings. The utility aumix is an OSS mixer which you are using. ALSA is a better project than OSS.
