Sound card problem

Hi,

I had some problem with my machine so had to re-install RH Linux 8. Previously, the sound card was working fine. But after the re-install, the sound card is not working properly. The sound card isn't mapped to any device nor is the test sound getting heard.

Please help.

Hello.

What kind of soundcard do you have? Are you using a desktop or laptop? Are there any error messages at boot?

I'm a Linux newb, but I might be able to help.
(Btw... Silence must be heard? From Enigma? =P )

Hi CC,

I am using a desktop with VIA soundcard. Works fine on Win2K and used to work fine on Linux too before the re-install. No error messages at boot. When I try to adjust the volume, it gives unable to access/modify /dev/mixer (I don't remember the exact wording of the error.)

(Yes, enigma )

Since I'm a newbie, (and haven't used RedHat), someone else might have some more knowledge on the subject. But let's try this out:

Install sndconfig, if you haven't already. Here's a link to it:
http://www.redhat.com/swr/i386/sndco...1.i386_dl.html

Open up a shell and get into root.
cd into usr/sbin
Run "sndconfig --noprobe" (without the quotes)
(this will run sndconfig without trying to find the driver for your card)
It takes a bit to load up. Be patient...
After it loads, try using the old, generic Sound Blaster driver. Not sure on the settings for you, but mine were:
I/O: 0x220 , IRQ: 5 , DMA: 1 .
If that passes the sound test, load up your multimedia player of choice and try playing something. If that works, reboot and try playing something again.

Send a reply with what happens.
