sound blaster live soundcard help
I have a creative live value sound card and I cannot get the digital output to work. I installed mandrake 8 and the digital output worked fine. I am running Red Hat 8 and it wont work with digital output, only analog. Does anyone know how to turn it on or change it? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Jason

I didn't have any problems with my digi out, the initial kernel found it fine. Have you recompiled or modified the kernel in any way? Is it just under Xwindows that you're using it?

I haven't done anything to the kernel (i dont know how to) and im using Gnome I believe. I installed emutools and turned the digital output on, but it says digital output for 5.1 only. I only have 2 speakers and no surround sound, maybe this is the problem? is there some way to change it to only a two speaker setup?

Did you try using it without emutools? Mine just uses the digi-out as is, with the basic 10k kernel mod.
hmmm... this is strange...

Before I put in emutools, the soundcard worked only with analog output, now it doesn't work with analog or digital. I was under the impression that emutools was the way to edit my emu10k settings. should i remove emutools and try to configure it in a different way??

Ok. load up the gnome / kde control panel. Find sound settings.
Make sure that "start sound server" or something similar is selected for starting X. reboot.
Netrack, what distro?

Mandrake uses alsa as it's default sound system, maybe redhat uses oss? Have you tried it with alsa?

The emu10k1driver supports the SB Live cards. It appears that digital output is supported but I've no first hand knowledge as I have the PCI512 which uses the same driver but is analog output only.

I have a SB Live! 5.1 SE, but I don't use digital out. I'm using the latest emu10k1 v0.20a and I've tried it with alsa.

This is probably going to sound really stupid, but I'm new to Linux. Anyhow, what is oss? Anything, that can help me get my soundcard to switch to digital output insted of analog, will make me the happiest person one earth, I don't care how I do it.
Distro=Redhat 8.0

OSS = Open Sound System (if memory serves)
OSS was the original set of drivers that provided sound capabilities for Linux. An ``OSS'' interface is available if you're using the ALSA driver so that you can run older software that is not yet (or perhaps never will be) able to use the ALSA driver natively.
If you can download and get the ALSA driver compiled. installed, etc. there is a command, amixer, that might do what you need. For example,
amixer sset switchname level,level
apparently lets me set the volume levels of the switch named `switchname' to the specified levels. Nice in that you could now do this in a shell script and not need to fire up the GUI to tweak volume levels. Anyway, take a look at the Alsa site and see if it looks like something you want to try.
Later...
