Software RAID 1

Hello.

I am wondering if it is possible to create a raid array (RAID1 in this case) using two IDE disks of different sizes but partitioning the larger one down to the size of the smaller one, and then using the rest of the space on the larger one as storage.

absolutely possible yes. you create md raid arrays on either entire drives or on partitions, purely depends whether you tell mdadm to use /dev/hda1 or /dev/hda for example.
