Software for PC hardware performance evalulation

Hi,

I want to know of any bootable software which i can burn on a CD and when i go to buy PC or Laptop i can just boot the machine from the CD and run some hardware tests on the machine i am buying.

It has happened quite a few times that i buy the exact same thing as my friend and still dont get the same performance because of the that particular product being faultly etc.

for example i would like to know the read write performance of the hard disk because that is where most often the problem is.

so does any one know of such softwares which can let me do performance evaluation and benchmarking tests on systems i am doing to buy.

?
