si3112 - Sillicon Image RAID Controller...

Hello, just a while ago i was trying to decide on a linux distro to intall, after downloading and trying to install mandrake 10.0 i discovered that my options are pretty limited. The Si3112 Sillicon Image RAID Controller that i use with my 2 wd raptors wont allow me to install mandrake (or i imagine many other ditros - or windows longhorn for that matter, though thats not a problem for this forum ) Anyways, what i was wondering is what linux distros can i use with this hardware - if any...

Thanks for your time!

P.S. Im a + - If you catch my drift...

Silicon image only produced a linux with raid driver for this card for some reallllllllly archaic distrobutions, in a precompiled format that's just about worthless.

Support for the chipset itself just as 2 seperate SATA channels is in the kernel by default.

Don't let the marketing fool you, Hardware RAID is awesome... with a $400 LSI SCSI 320 Megaraid card... or the $120 SATA 3ware raid card... but these things are 3/4's software raid anyway. Ditching hardware raid and just letting the kernel do that might be the best bet.

Cheers,
