Cannon is very well known for NOT supporting any os other than MS Windows
if it is not on the S.A.N.E. list
http://www.sane-project.org/sane-supported-devices.html

it is likely not supported

use Windows to scan
or
buy a supported scanner

but the The PIXMA MP280 is listed a "good" for usb

you need to have SANE installed
should be by default

there should be a GUI for xsane
