Serial Port on Dell C600

OK, I know that Dell & MS are in bed with each other.....

I am trying to get my serial port to work. (Dell C600 - PIII@1GHz, 512MB RAM - Debian Sarge - 2.6.11-1-686)

Whenever I type in (as root) "cu -l /dev/ttyS0 -s 9600", I get:

cu: open (/dev/ttyS0): Permission denied
cu: /dev/ttyS0: Line in use

S1, s0, s1, etc all say te same thing. How do I fix?

I found it......

For some reason, the module does not load. I had to re-compile the kernel with serial port discipline compiled in rather than as a module.
