serial modem trouble

hi
I have a motorolla sm56 fax modem and i posted on here a while back and someone gave me advice to get a serial modem, which i managed to borrow off of a friend its an older one 33.6k made by boca research when i booted red hat it said it found it and went into a config wizard before it finished booting and it gave me the option to configure it so i did then it said updating fstab and finished booting
when i logged in as root i couldnt find it anywhere it wasnt listed in the hardware list nor was it in fstab i looked about every place i could think of and i still couldnt find it, i really at a loss as to what to do here, the modem works fine in windows 98 so i know its not that.
please help

system specs
dell dimesion 8100
P4 1300mhz
640mb ram
220gb hd
dual booting with win98 and red hat 9 enterprise ws

What do you use to connect to the net? You use wvdial, Kppp or what?

If you use Kppp, click on configure, then click the modem tab. Select /dev/ttyS0 and see if it finds it by hitting connect. If not, try /dev/ttyS1 and trying that one. Sometimes /dev/modem will work if the link is there.

If you use wvdial, type in wvdialconf and go through that setup program. It should scan the serial ports for your modem and then create the config file for it. You may also need to configure ppp as well for you to stay connected. Just type in pppconfig and set up a new connection. For most ISPs, choose the default selection. I have to leave my DNS servers blank to. It gets those when it connects.

Either way, I see no reason it would need to edit fstab. That is a new one on me.

Hope one of those helps.

i tried all that stuff you suggested and no of it worked, unfortunetly, nor do i know which program im using for the internet connection its just the defualt red hat 9 internet config wizard in kde desktop, also do you think if i got a serial to usb adapter do you think i would have better luck getting it to work, and i just recently installed a hp laser printer through a parallel port and it works fine so i really dont know what the deal is here.
and actually come to think of it from what your describing it might be kppp that im using but it never actually says that and if you have any recomendations on programs that would help me get this blasted thing working it would be much appricated.

It's kind of hard to say with out knowing what you are using. Usually using a serial modem just plain works with very little configuring. It is what Linux has been using for years.

You sure the modem works? Maybe it is bad or something.

I'll think on it. Got to go get a bath. I am covered in insulation. I itch, a lot.

Later

Hey i finally got it working for somereason dev/ttys0 worked, and i had tried before and it didnt so i dont know why it worked this time, but now that its working is there a way to tell what speed its connecting at cause it doesnt show it and its really slow i found out which dialer im using its red hat config network 1.2.58 i set the speed in the config as fast as itll go and it still seems about half of what i get in windows and whenever i download stuff i never get anything faster than 1k/sec which really sucks. normally in windows i get at least 2.5 k so if you have any pointers that would really help.
thanks
