Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

SCSI addresses keep changing

Sorry if this is in the wrong place

I have installed a DVD Bay (holding 4 dvd drives). They are connected to my Linux box (running Fedora 5) by usb. Everything seems to be working (I can mount the dvd drives and burn data to them) but everytime the machine reboots the address of the drives changes e.g. the dvd drive in the top bay will be /dev/scd0 but when the machine reboots it becomes /dev/scd3. Is there anyway to stop this from happening?

Yes, by using udev rules. udev is the new hotplug-based device manager for Linux. It creates /dev entries dynamically for each device based on certain rules kept in configuration files. You can set up rules so that it will recognize each drive separately, say by serial number, and create a dedicated device entry for each one.

See here for lots of info about udev and how to write rules for it:

Cool.

I'm at work now but will look at it later. I'll post again if I have any trouble.

Thanks Again!
