Screen Resolution Incorrect with NVIDIA GeForce4 7400 and Ubuntu Dapper

I have just installed Ubuntu Dapper and tried to install the NVIDIA drivers by following method 1 of the guide located at http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper but the screen resolution is wrong. I have an advent 7093 laptop, with a widescreen display, but it is being detected as 1024x768. With the NVIDIA drivers installed, it stretches the desktop to fit the display, which means everything looks "fat."

How can I have my screen detected correctly? Or, can I change my xorg.conf to include the correct resolution of 1200x800?

I'm using gnome at the moment, but have kde installed as well. Before Ubuntu I had OpenSuse 10.1, which worked fine after installing the drivers manually from the download on the nvidia site.

Yes, manually editing xorg.conf is definitely the easiest and fastest way, assuming you are comfortable with a text editor (which I'll assume you are). Personally, manual edits are the only method I now use to modify xorg.conf. Note: I'd suggest adding the 1200x800 setting to the set of available resolutions, rather than to overwrite an existing setting with the new one. Good luck with it
