Scanner problems

I'm running Ubuntu 18.04.1 I have a Canon imageClass MF416dw I can print to it. I cannot scan from it, via USB or over the network.

Over USB, I can see the device:

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

Over the network, the pixma backend does talk to and from the scanner, but says it cannot find it.

I'm not familiar with this particular scanner/printer. However, I did some digging and found this interesting exchange:

In particular, you could consider adding the SANE ppa to and upgrading the SANE package to the dev version which might help. I know the discussion I linked to is for a different model of Canon printer, but the issue appears very similar and the latest SANE package may have updates that you currently do not have in Ubunutu 18.04.
