I'm trying to make everyting run on my new debian sarge install. i compiled kernel 2.6.5 with emu10k1 driver in it.
now i'm sure everything should work just fine cause before I uninstalled gnome and all its relatives, the sound was working fine with system events, xmms and gaim.
I checked dmesg and it's telling me ALSA found my sblive.
tryed cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp as user and as root but without any resulting sound.
xmms doesn't seem to be complaining.
As Gstreamer isn't there anymore, is it possible that somthing isn't starting?
or maybe do i have to ajust mute state/ volume?
if so, how?
edit: I'm using fluxbox now. so no control panel or so

Open a terminal and type alsamixer to adjust your mixers.
Then open XMMS, right-click on the window and go to Options=>Preferences and change the output plugin to ALSA (since if you're using eSound, it may have been uninstalled, or in any case esd is probably not running). Do the same for GAIM. You won't have system sounds if you don't have either the GNOME or KDE sound servers running, as they are responsible for system sounds under their respective environments.
Alternatively, you could set esd to run when you start fluxbox, but since I don't know how you start fluxbox, I can't give you specific instructions (there are several manners to do this). That should re-enable system sounds, and might also fix your other issues, if you don't feel like changing settings on the various programs.
I run a command I found somewhere (I think on this forum) to know which program was using /dev/dsp and it told me esd was using it.
fluxbox is set as my default window manager in the debian alternatives system but to be able to have backgrounds on both my monitors and to start the slit apps, I use ~/.xsession
now if esd is started at bootup, it must be in a script somewhere or maybe handled by the alternatives spaghetti system.
is there a similar mixer for esd?
some time ago I tried installing a sound server. I found something called ysound or something like that. It started sound but it wasn't able to produce sound after the next reboot and it doesn't work anymore if I remove and reinstall it.
hmm, was wrong for the fact that esd was started.. fuser -v /dev/dsp told me xmms used the device but not esd..
I tried starting esd by hand with esd -as 1 -nobeeps. xmms doesn't complain at all when put in esd mode but still, no sound comes out of the speakers (and I'm not crazy, they're plugged in the right hole cause in winxp the sound works perfectly)
Wow!! I have sound!
ok, as you were saying, I only had to ajust mixer settings so the volume would be higher than 0%. but that mixer I couldn't find, so I installed a little dockapp called wmix that does the mixing job.
now I can finally have music while programming
