Samsung ML-2240 - GUI lpr doesn't work

Hi. I've got a Sumsung ML-2240 monochrome laser printer connected via USB to my Slackware 12.0 Linux system (running the 2.6.28.6 kernel). I've installed the Samsung Linux software from the version 1.07 CD disc that came with the printer.

The printer is working fine under CUPS and I can print to it using the 'lp' or /usr/bin/lpr-cups commands.

However the Samsung 'GUI' lpr - which it installs as /usr/bin/lpr (a symbolic link to /opt/Samsung/mfp/bin/slpr) - doesn't work. On running the command with no arguments a GUI window pops up for me to select a file; when I select one and click on OPEN the file selection window is replaced with a 'print dialogue' window, looking much the same as one from Microsoft Windows - a dropdown list of printers to select, a 'Page Selection' box and a 'Copies' box.

However the 'Properties' button is disabled - grayed out - as is the 'OK' button, and nothing I do - selecting either the Samsung ML-2240 or the other print-to-file printer I have configured on the system - causes those buttons to be enabled. Thus I can go no further, and cannot print using the Samsung 'lpr' command.

I've searched the Internet; one post suggests that the Samsung lpr command has a superior set of properties to select, so I'm keen to try and get it to work. But I've found no suggestions as to what can be wrong.

An 'strace' of the system calls invoked by the command doesn't show any obvious file permission problems, failed opens, et cetera.

Can anyone help? Thanks!
