This is a dual boot system with Windows98 (don't ask - school/licensing reason). Trying to get the NIC to recognize at the same IRQ/IO etc has been challenging.
If I turn OFF the plug and play, Linux can't find a NIC. If I turn it on, successive boots of Windows and Linux keep changing the IRQ/IO settings so as to chase all over the memory map. The next time the other OS boots, it either won't function on the network, or tries to recognize and install "new" hardware. I'm using a Kingston NE2000 clone - a 2021 I think. Both systems work fine on the net when they are installed correctly.
I tried to turn off P&P and force set the devices but Linux can't find the NIC. Do I have to go get an old ISA bus NIC with jumpers to make this work? Gotta be a better way...
Thank you for your replies. The card is a NE2000 clone - Kingston brand - I think a 2021 - if not, a 20BT. I can find out easily what each booted system thinks the settings are and I can force the settings no problem on w98 - getting Linux to accept the settings I give it and be willing to boot to them without either (a) trying to change them or (b) not finding the NIC at all due to P&P being off seems to be my challenge.
