RH8 - can't configure NIC

This is a dual boot system with Windows98 (don't ask - school/licensing reason). Trying to get the NIC to recognize at the same IRQ/IO etc has been challenging.

If I turn OFF the plug and play, Linux can't find a NIC. If I turn it on, successive boots of Windows and Linux keep changing the IRQ/IO settings so as to chase all over the memory map. The next time the other OS boots, it either won't function on the network, or tries to recognize and install "new" hardware. I'm using a Kingston NE2000 clone - a 2021 I think. Both systems work fine on the net when they are installed correctly.

I tried to turn off P&P and force set the devices but Linux can't find the NIC. Do I have to go get an old ISA bus NIC with jumpers to make this work? Gotta be a better way...

Thanks for your collective wisdom.

You can find what IRQ/IO settings that pci cards use this way:

# What pci cards are installed and what irq/port is used
cat /proc/pci

Linux Ethernet-Howto

# Redhat links
RedHat Linux Manuals
Maximum RPM
rpmfind
Easier software management: apt4rpm - Red Carpet
RedHat 8.0 Tips & Tricks

# Redhat 7.3 down configuration commands
setup leads to several configuration tools

# Redhat 7.3 up configuration commands
Configure soundcard:
redhat-config-soundcard
Configure X server:
redhat-config-xfree86
Configure network:
redhat-config-network

What kind of network card is it?

Thank you for your replies. The card is a NE2000 clone - Kingston brand - I think a 2021 - if not, a 20BT. I can find out easily what each booted system thinks the settings are and I can force the settings no problem on w98 - getting Linux to accept the settings I give it and be willing to boot to them without either (a) trying to change them or (b) not finding the NIC at all due to P&P being off seems to be my challenge.

Thanks again.

Turn plug and play off, then post the results of:

cat /proc/pci

Just the two entries for your nics will do

Here is proc/pci, though this is an ISA bus device - one nic only.
Entries corresponding to this device absent from interrupts and ioports, as well.

PCI devices found:
Bus 0, device 0, function 0:
Host bridge: Intel Corp. 430HX - 82439HX TXC [Triton II] (rev 3).
Master Capable. Latency=32.
Bus 0, device 7, function 0:
ISA bridge: Intel Corp. 82371SB PIIX3 ISA [Natoma/Triton II] (rev 1).
Bus 0, device 7, function 1:
IDE interface: Intel Corp. 82371SB PIIX3 IDE [Natoma/Triton II] (rev 0).
Master Capable. Latency=32.
I/O at 0xf000 [0xf00f].
Bus 0, device 7, function 2:
USB Controller: Intel Corp. 82371SB PIIX3 USB [Natoma/Triton II] (rev 1).
IRQ 11.
Master Capable. Latency=32.
I/O at 0x6000 [0x601f].
Bus 0, device 19, function 0:
VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc. 86c764/765 [Trio32/64/64V+] (rev 83).
IRQ 10.
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xe0000000 [0xe3ffffff].

Thanks

I keep forgetting there are some boxes still with the ISA slot.

I don't have any, so I am not familiar with how to set one up.

I think I'll step back and perhaps try a PCI card or another NE2000 that lets me set the jumpers manually. Thanks for your help.
