Unhappy replace "hdd"?? (oops!)

Hi all,

I have been trying (in vain) to get my DVD burner working (as a burner, or player - anything). In the course of my googling/experimenting I discovered that /dev/dvd was symlinked to /dev/hdc which is wrong, my dvd drive is /dev/hdd. So off to google again... to figure out how to delete a symlink. Well, long story short, I managed to delete /dev/hdd !! OOPS! So my question is how do I get it back?

Google doesn't seem to be my friend on this one.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Louis

Code:
cd /dev/
./MAKEDEV hdd
rm -f dvd
ln -s dvd hdc

or even compile devfs into the kernel or load devfsd at startup

devfsd automatically manages the dev tree and deletes redundant entries

THANKS! That appears to work until I get to making the new symlink, then I get:
Code:
root@slackmain:/dev# ln -s dvd hdc
ln: `hdc': File exists
I am also wondering... shouldn't I be putting hdd? since that is my dvd?? (I tried that too and got the same error.)

Thanks for the help so far!

Thanks for the hint... I am looking at it now. I'm not sure yet if I want to tackle that right now or not, but it does look interesting. Maybe I'll give it a go when I'm not QUITE so noob

The correct syntax is
ln -s device link_name

Therefore:
ln -s hdd dvd

See man pages additional info.

THANK YOU! That did the trick!

I actually wondered about that, but after managing to delete hdd, I thought I'd go slower this time around.

Now on to the next problem

Thanks again,

Louis
