Hi, this is my first attempt at installing linux outside of VMware, so I'm still a pretty big newbie at linux. Anyway, I got my hands on a spare 13 gb hard drive (IDE) and set it up as a secondary hard drive on my desktop, then installed Redhat 9.0 using the Personal Desktop installation. As soon as I restarted, I got a kernel panic (posted at the end of this message)... I managed to get into a unix command prompt by adding "single" to the end of my kernel options from GRUB, but I can't get any farther than the command prompt. I've reinstalled Redhat twice, still the same message and no boot.

This is probably a common problem, but I can't seem to find much about it online and I've tried everything I can think of. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hmm... I got it to boot one time today, I typed "exit" at the unix prompt and Redhat booted up just fine... But now it's giving me the kernel panic again and won't boot.

Do you have any RAID and/or SCSI controllers in your system? If so, you may need to supply a driver disk when installing. I recently had a problem where the the kernel would load the wrong driver for an HPT374 RAID controller, even though I used a driver disk... I ended up having to create a custom kernel that excluded the HPT drivers that are built-in to RedHat and compiling/installing a driver from source code from the HPT website. Why not post the output of /sbin/lspic (run as root). Here's an example:

its ok, i fixd it, i had to boot into rescue mode, then i had to edit the inet or somethin file, then i changd the boot mode from 5 to 3 then i rebooted, and i changd somethin else, then i typed startx then it loaded, then i wus in d system and changd bak 2 a 5,
