RedHat 9 and Speedtouch USB

I am very new to Linux and I'm dual booting with XP. Can anybody point me in the right direction to find a decent "How to". I have tried "Webconexions" walkthrough but it was specifically for Redhat 8 and although I have installed "speedtouch-1.1-1.i586.rpm" and Speedmgmt.tar.gz. after carefully following the file edits, I have a problem with /etc/modules.conf although I have double checked the lines that I have added, on boot up, I get error messages re: lines 5,6,7,8 not valid .
Also in the file that I created touch /etc/ppp/peers/adsl I had to add lines that included..... kdebug 1..... as I am using gnome, is this correct?

Thanks for any advice that you may have
