Question Redh Hat EL Workstation 3 & nvidia - help....


Hi all,

I installed Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation 3 Update 1 this week and have been trying to get the nvidia drivers up and running. So far no luck.

I was running Red Hat 9 with an MSI GEForce 5600 AGP card just fine. I can do the nividia driver install in my sleep (have darn near had to when I was first getting that running).

Anyway, I did the install on WS 3 with the new 5336 package and also with the same version I was running before - 4496. Neither works though X does appear to start.

The install doesn't report errors and I'm adding my XFree86 log at the end.

It seems to load X ok and I get the hourglass fine. When it should switch over to the login screen, that's where the trouble comes. The screen goes all a light gray except for the login window for my username which stays white. But that's it. The screen just goes very light gray with a small rectangular white window the same size and location as the regular user id window. The mouse cursor is active and looks normal. I can move it around, etc.

I've tried just typing in my login information but no go. I also can't Ctrl-Alt over to any text consoles. The only way out at that time appears to be a hard reset.

The install does the "ldconfig" command but I've also run that manually under single user. I properly configured my XF86Config file - or at least believe I have.

I also copied the GL libraries into /usr/include/GL from the nvidia files. I had tried with and without this step - neither worked.

The only way to get into the graphical environment is to edit XF86Config back to the supplied "nv" driver so at least I can do that. But response is slow and the nvidia driver worked so much better under Red Hat 9.

The only difference between the XF86Config file that won't work and this one is the change in the driver from "nv" to "nvidia".
