Thanks for the link ondoho. The key answer there is that you should have as much ram as needed for both (if only running two - one host and one guest.) So the really old laptops will have to make do with a dual boot. And the desktops and C2D laptops will need both enough ram for two OS and VT support in the cpu to run a VM.

I am not familiar with dosbox. I have heard of it, but never took the next step to learn what it can/cannot do. I will research it though, thanks for the pointer.
