Did you know there are drivers on the ATI website released about 11 days ago for the radeon 9200 up to 9800 pro?

These are new drivers for the Radeon, not the ones for the Firegl. The fireglx drivers did not work with my 9800 pro, but these new ones work very well if you use the fglxconfig program to configure.

Wow! Well quite obviously there were bugs in the driver. It now works! I've got 1600x1200 resolution. See now this is an astonishing thing. I suppose that I'll never get to find out what was wrong, but here's the thing: other people got it to work! What it tells me is perhaps this: that in the Linux world things tend to work this way. I can say this: if I'd seen someone else's config with their log files, their hardware config and possibly their kernel config then I might have twigged sooner and just waited for ATI to get it right for all of us. But with all the tidbits in this forum and others I stumbled along from one wek to the next. All the time I thought that if I'd just read a bit more, if I just untangled some mangled symtax, is I just asked one more question, then I'd get it right and things would fall into place. Now don't get me wrong, I think that this is a powerful community that has grown up around Linux, but I think that we might be served well by posting a much as evidence as we can muster on the matter at hand. Aw I think that I should just be grateful that someone saw my (humungus) post and alerted me to new drivers. I've been haunting ATI's website myself and I never would have thought to look in "Graphical Driver". I mean who thought up these catagories?
Oh well thank you, thank you gain and again.

Did I mention that I'm having problems getting my Audigy 2 sound card to work. I'm sure that I've got some log files I can post...

Again I am far from a guru...but you should have the alsa drivers with the emuko1 or something like that to install from the install disks. The only funky thing is that you have to either use the tool when you install it or the alsa program to actually turn to volume up. Play with it -- it will work. All the volumes are down by default

Yeah. The drivers are installed: i can see this on boot up, I can also go to the /proc file system (I forget where and I'm currently on windows) and see info about the card and both the ALSA mixer as well as YAST2 (Suse's config utility) report that the card is active (although YAST reports it as Audigy). I've played with the mixer but get no sound. Any idea which knobs and buttons I should push?

i think that means the driver couldn't find the addresses of the functions it wanted to execute... i think so - i'm no library guru... but whatever

to your audigy problem:
i've read in a gentoo forum that the alsa-emu10k1-drivers don't always work with audigy2s and then one should use the "official" (OSS?) drivers by creative...
i don't really know if you already have them or how you should setup them best... look at sdb.suse.com... there are often very helpful tips...

use Yast2, go to hardware then soundcard, then click on volume, turn it all up and hit the test button and tell me what happens

In /etc/modules.conf just add (as root) :

options agpgart agp_try_unsupported=1

(Assuming that agpgart is loaded, obviously).
Try "modprobe agpgart" to see that.

Should run fine then.
