Radeon 9600 XT, HUGE problems

Hi,

I'm running Redhat 9, I recently upgraded my graphics card to a Radeon 9600 XT. I started my linux box and removed old graphic cards configuration but didnt find new card. I then got X server errors and then it brought me to the window where you choose how many colours and what card your using. I tried millions of colours and the Radon 9700 pro (Cause theres no Radeon 9600 XT), brings up graphical log in screen but then when I log in it freezes up. I then tried the deafult grpahic card (The viesa 1) and that works but sometimes I get glitchs and the graphics are shit. How do I fix this problem?

I would try using the drivers provided by ATI at:

http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html

I think there are some open source drivers as well, but I was able to get the ones above to work on my Radeon 9600Pro (not XT) . I did however use a script from:

http://kano.mipooh.net/

to ease the install process, but I believe that script was specifically designed for Knoppix/Debian so it may not be useful to you.

Its done it again! I reinstalled and download the important updates (Kernel, X-Free86 etc) download the linux graphics patch for the version of X-Free86 I have, Restarted and Then I got the same problem I had before about some crap about X-Server cant start and you must then select your graphics card again and this time I thought since I installed the patch and everything it should say 9600 XT in list, Well it doesnt! Then I thought I'd try it on Radeon 9700 but now I can get into log in screen, Type my username and pass and it gets to load menu and freezes! I now cant change back to VESA (The generic card that my computer was running Red Hat 9 before). WHAT I DO! How can I change me card if I cant get in, How do I fix this?

what is the exact error message you get??

quick guide (generic) guide to install ATI drivers from my own exp.

1. install the rpm (use the CL: rpm -Uvh --force fglrx*)
2. run fglrxconfig (select to use external agpgart module.)
3. Edit the new /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file add # in front of BusId of the card (towards to bottom)
4. restart x

if you get further error messages.... post up the output of these:

dmesg | grep agp
dmesg | grep fglrx
&
check the log file.. /var/log/XFree86.0.log (look towards teh bottom for specific errors on modules not loading i.e. fglrx.

good luck....

thanks:trey

when you install the ATI drivers.. you can no longer use redhats videocard selection...

you need to run fglrxconfig... busid is basically the motherboard location of your video card.. your system determines what the bus id is.

Unhappy 9600 XT RH9 Similar Problem

Im running a fully updated install of Redhat 9 (as up to date as up2date gets it). And am having problems with ATI's Linux drivers for Radeons.

I have a 9600 XT and their drivers are for an older version of XFree86 and I cant get them to work even when i --force. ATI is about as helpful as a dung beetle without legs, so hopefully you guys can give me a hand, I know im not the only one dealing with this. Thanks.

What motherboard do you have? I believe the XT's run at AGP 3.0 (8x) I just got my 9800 working (running SuSE) with much difficulty (until I found this guide) on a KT400. (guide is @ http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthre...eadid=33730117) ...however for it to work w/ my suse I had to use the old 3.2.8 drivers...then just follow the guide to the letter...well, if your running SuSE...dunno maybe it will work with some modification on RH9...or just switch to SuSE :P...

btw SuSE is a GOD (hope I didn't offend anyone :P) with hardware
