radeon 9550 drivers problem

found many info about installing ati's video drivers, but it didn't help me=(

when installing drivers from binary under X all goes gine, but i still have Mesa.
i tried to compile module manually from /lib/modules/fglrx, but when i run make.sh i get error that i'm not in a login shell. as i don't know why it's complaining (my login shell is bash and i run it under bash) i modified this script not to exit in this case. the module seems to build without problems. i loaded it, but still have Mesa, and 350fps in glxgears.

any suggestions except buying nVidia?

mobo: ga-k8ns (nforce 3)
cpu: athlon64 2800
video: radeon 9550
x.org: 6.8.2
lfs 6.1 (x86)
