RADEON 9200 vs GeForce FX5200

when my s3 prosavage km133 wasn't supported in rh 9, I began thinking it was time for an upgrade. I saw two nice video cards at newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...=BROWSE&depa=1
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...pa=1&section=2
(just go to newegg and paste that in after it loads. i'll edit this once i get 5 posts...)
I am leaning towards the radeon, but wasn't sure if there are any better deals. From what I have found, Radeons are more compatible on Linux. Right now I can't even watch videos at full-screen, so I am just worried at which one will work with linux right off the bat.

intrinsically, my experience has shown that geforce fx 5200's have sucked royally

depending on with whom you talk, you will get mixed answers as to which is easier to install; for me, nvidia has been very easy to setup (never tried radeon installs)

while i love ati cards more than nvidia, radeon drivers for linux have not shown to be as good nvidia (and i hear that radeons don't work with wine that well)

i suggest nvidia if you intend to play games on linux (but do yourself a favor and get a geforce 4 ti, they will beat the fx 5200 any day); but if you only want to watch videos and such, i recommend the radeon (especially if you want to play games on windows)

well, with the majority of people telling me to get the nvidia at another forum, i found this at newegg:

its a refurb asus ti4200. it looks nice, but it will work in any motherboard, right? as in asus didn't make it only for their boards.

Thumbs up I would rather go with NVIDIA

My personal experience is with NVIDIA and Red Hat Linux, I have a TNT2 M64 and a GeForce2 GTS and they work flawlessly with NVIDIA Linux Drivers. I had heard about other people having problems with ATI Linux Drivers, but don’t have first hand experience. Both cards are AGP and are couple with Athlon processors.

I’d also heard about other people having problems with GeForce FX 5200 and 5200 Ultra on Linux, and only with these cards. So, if you are on a budget I would recommend a GeForce4 MX, if not I would go with a GeForce FX 5700 or higher. In fact my next upgrade will be a Leadtek GeForce FX 5700 non-Ultra with 128MB

I’d seen the difference between DirectX 8 and 9 cards and it’s huge. I recommend you get one of the newer models.

A friend of mine has a Radeon 7500 and an ALL-IN-WONDER 9700 and they’re great for gaming under Windows, he doesn’t run Linux. I’d done some video capture and edition with the AIW and Pinnacle Studio 8 and I’m very satisfied with the results.

But as I said before, I would rather go with NVIDIA.

I have a radeon 9800 pro and absolutely hate it in linux. Their drivers are horrible. And what is this talk about only no wineX support? 1/2 of native linux games out there dont work on ATI cards. the only ones i can think of are Et (and anyother q3 based game) and Neverwinter nights. If I could go back now, i wouldnt have bought an ATI (and im Canadian). NVidia seems to be the most interested in keeping thier customers happy. Im not even fond of the Windows drivers for ATI. if i want to change my AA settings, it takes like 2 minutes. with Nvidia on the other hand, i can change settings like filtering and AA in about 5 seconds.
