radeon 9100 and higher refresh rates in console

My system is Gentoo Linux 2004.1 on kernel 2.6.7-r13. What i want is to get higher refresh rates in console but i heard that Radeon 9100 isnt VBE 3.0 compliant so it doesnt support that. Is it true ? If yes than how can i do it configuring linux ? The last thing that i want to do is to flash the bios of my radeon and change the default refresh rate but i dont want to do this if there is another solution (i have no floppy and its risky ).
