Try upgrade drivers fro ati website. For installing them probably you will need to force installation, so:
1.- log as root
2.- rpm -ihv --force packet_name.rpm
3.- run fglrxconfig (will ask you some questions to answer yes/no and X config file will be written)
It didn't work... I installed the new driver/rpm, ran the config, but nothing....
any more Ideas?

i have exactly the same problem like you, exept my os is mandrake 9.2
everything the same! same prompts and everithing
i fell better this time
for the helpers: we are asking a simple way to upgrade
2.) If I have upgrade the driver, How do I install the RPM in command prompt mode?
burn a disk? how enter a location to a disk in the command prompt?
if it can help: i have amd 2500+, asus a7n8x-x, mandrake 9.2, ati 9600 pro
i download a package from ati, i burn on a disk, i upgrade? give please the command lines
