question about free and ram

is free -m a way to find out how much ram you have? according to the side of my box which has the specs i have 256 mb DDR but according to free -m i have 251 mb. what happened to the other five mb? is it kind of like you may have a 56k modem but the phone lines to your house can only handlle a 28 k? Sorry if that is a bad analogy. thanks in advanced.

no, it's like You buy an 80 GB harddisk, and you get 79 GB.

The marketing name sometimes vary from the actual size of things.

Also, I have 512 MB RAM and it shows only 508 MB.
