PS2 mouse problems with kernel 2.6
I've installed kernel V2.6.0-test2 and am having problems with my PS2 mouse. If I boot the kernel without specifying any options the pointer behaves eratically when it's scrolled slowly. It "bounces" slightly making it difficult to position it on window and menu buttons. If I specify the psmouse_noext option when booting the cursor behaves properly but the wheel stops working.
Has anyone run into this problem or come across any references to it?
It's an HP three button (wheel is the middle button) mouse and works fine with kernel 2.4 using IMPS2. I'm running xfree86 v4.2.0.
I understand 2.6 kernels have a different way of handling keyboard/mouse events. Do you have gpm (the console mouse driver) running by any chance? I've had gpm/X conflicts on earlier kernel/XFree versions. Not quite as you describe tho'.

Thanks for the reply. I don't have gpm installed but was thinking of doing so to see if it works any better. Yes the keyboard/mouse code seems to have changed quite a bit. I'm going to try a newer version of the kernel, I think theres a test4 version available.

I hacked psmouse-base.c to dump the packets received from the psaux port and noticed that everytime the cursor bounced the same patterns appeared. I then hacked the file to ignore the patterns and the mouse is working well now. It's not perfect but it's much better and it's usable now. I love this OS!

The problem turned out to be the wireless mouse adapter connected to the USB port. I grew tired of replacing the batteries in the wireless mouse so I switched to the PS2 mouse. When I upgraded to kernel V2.6 I didn't include USB support, since it had only been needed for the mouse, but I left the receiver plugged into the USB port. Disconnecting the receiver resolved the problem and also cleared up some problems with the modem and improved system performance.
