problems with sony monitr and x.org

Hello, this is my second post. sorry if it seems like spam. so... here goes!

i have a problem with x. i have slack 10.0 and my monitor is sony g220r

link for description:

displaysbysony.com/displayb2b/model.jsp?pCode=CRT&pModelId=543&pMenu=Specs

i have a generic video card. a very old one.

i can fun "xorgconfig" and set it up with my specifications. then when i type startx, it goes wacky. either my monitor has a 800x600 and 56 Hz, with 256 colors, or no gui at all.
if you need more info on my computer, then just ask me.
thanx in advance!

Dave Ad

Vertical Refresh (Hz): 48-170
try vesa or vga for the card,look at /etc/xorg.conf and edit it or rerun xorgconfig,I think that is for slackware.check this out;

Your almost there,we need the graphic card or onboard graphics,as root
Code:
dmesg
post the graphics part, and you need to put 8 for the memory and if the mode isn't listed you can't change to that.
"640x480" for 8 bit
"640x480" for 16 bit
"640x480" for 24 bit

1. change modes for 8 bit
2. change modes for 16 bit
3. change modes for 24 bit

i change it to

"640x480" for 8 bit
"800x600" for 16 bit
"1024x768" for 24 bit* can't change it to a mode not above
1. 256k
2. 512k
etc... i dont know how much i have, so i type 1
12. other

*select 6,7 or 8 to give you more options

i put it to 6, 7, and 8 and all the configurations didnt work.

If you have that much video memory you can use higher resolutions if your
monitor will support it.
