Angry problem with VIA technologies soundcard!

Hello!
I recently installed RH 8.0 , but I don't get the soundcard to work!!
I have a VIA technologies soundcard, a VT8233 AC97 that's onboard my mainboard(MSI KT3 Ultra).
I've tried changing the output for the cable on the soundcard, but that didn't help.
I get the configurationmeny for the soundcard up,and I't seems that RH has located it, but when I try the "test sound"-button, there's no sound, I've tried with mp3s,CDs,etc...nothing works...
I've got a XP1900+,256MB ram,80 GB, GF4 TI4400,
please help! anyone??!

What's the chipset listing from right off of the soundcard?

/sbin/lspci -v

And post back whatever refers to "Multimedia Controller"

Cheers,

I had the same problem. Just opened my /etc/rc.d/rc.modules in an editor and added the following lines under "Sound Support"

# VIA Technologies
/sbin/modprobe via82cxxx_audio
/sbin/modprobe ac97_codec

You may have to change your permissions to allow users to use the card, I know I did.

If that doesn't work, post back, I think I remember there being something goofy about the 8233 version of the chip.

the RHL 8.0 driver won't work for it (well, in my machine that has the same onboard soundcard).

The one i've tried that surely worked was opensound (http://www.4front-tech.com/) and the alsa drivers (psyche.freshrpms.net).

hth.

I had the same problem. My sound card is a RealTek ALC650 "AC97 based on the VIA82xxx whatever. I had to use the ALSA driver to get it to work

I'm not sure of the web site, I got my ALSA driver from RealTek

Good Luck

I thought I remembered this one:

Code:
Alan Cox <alan@lxorguk.ukuu.org.uk>:
  o fix legacy hd
  o various minor noise merges
  o update Pavel credits
o via audio updates to add 8233/8235 support
From the 2.4.21-pre5 changelog

Cheers,
