Smile problem with Nikin usb camera picture transfer

Hi Guys,

I have successfully used my nikon coolpix p5100 connected by usb to download pictures to my Deb 4.0 system for storage purposes. Today however something happened which I have never seen before.

I plugged in the camera, and my Deb 4.0 running KDE popped up its usual dialogue allowing me to open a folder for the camera. When I did this the system gave me messages :
initialising camera
stalled

and the open folder operation hung at 55% complete.

I have tried changing ports and cables ( and in fact used my son's Windows machine to check the camera out - it seemed to work o.k.)

I later tried again, this time without opening the folder on the camera, just drag & drop it to the desktop. This worked, but took ages (about 10 mins with AMD 64).

Transfer rate it reckoned at 145 kB /s and with the same messages cycling through the 10 mins:
initialising camera
Downloading
Stalled
etc...

The folder size is 35MB and contains 54 jpeg images

any help much appreciated

Greeb

I have a Nikon Coolpix 5000, the model one earlier than yours. On my camera I had to set the camera to PTP mode, not Mass Storage mode to transfer pics. The option is shown in the book that came with the camera. I believe the default mode is Mass Storage, since this is the mode that works with wondoze.

The other thing I did, was to buy a card reader that the memory card plugs into, then into the USB port on any system. The memory card is seen as external memory. It auto mounts on Mandy, I just open Konqueror and drag and drop the pics I need to copy. I find this much more convenient than using the camera. Don't need to mess with settings, and don't need to make sure the battery has enough life left not to fail during the transfer. ( just a suggestion ).

One other suggestion, have a look at Nikons web site. There is a good support section. It lists many helpful hints on getting the best from your camera. There is also a section on downloads, if there are any for your model.

Hope this helps.
