problem with IDE hard disk on a self compiled kernel

Hi,
I am trying to create customized Linux distro based on centos 5.5 for my organization. For security reasons, we want the loadable security modules disabled. I am following the tutorial on http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/compil...kernel-26.html

Apart from disabling the loadable module support, we have also disabled the usb device support, CD/DVD filesystem support and support for MAC OS partitions and bluetooth networking support.

Everything is fine but when I give make install the system complains about missing ehci_hcd, ohci_hcd, uhci_hcd and ata_piix module.
The first three are expected to be missing as the support of usb devices has been disabled. But I am unable to get why is ata_piix module missing???

As a result when I boot using the customerized kernel (2.6.34-1), after the grub screen a black screen shows up which states that the new initrd and kernel while has been chosen and then the screeen goes totally blank.

the above settings worked fine with a SCSI hard disk and system booted properly.

Also when the above procedure was repeated on the same pc (the one with IDE drive) with support for loadable security modules enabled there is no complain about the ata_piix module and the system boots fine.

The directive CONFIG_ATA_PIIX and other related directives are set to y(yes) in .config file

Any help or guidance would really be appreciated

Thanks,

See now? When you disable loadable modules (that's probably what you mean by "loadable security modules" ... just disabling the whole module loading is indeed the most secure and most cumbersome config), there just are NO MODULES.

This means you don't need any entries in /etc/modules and you don't need an initrd/initramfs. Without modules, the kernel must have everything it needs to mount / builtin.

You're definitely missing one. Maybe the filesystem? Or the generic support for IDE/ATA Harddisks?

Sorry if this sounds rude, but at least in my point of view -- you can do the "dirty" work yourself .. the typical things to check are: IDE controller, generic IDE harddisk support and filesystem support. Or, if you are using a "modern" kernel -- look for the "libata" subsystem, it is also used for PATA nowadays.
