Problem with ATI

I know that there are literally thousands of threads about ATI Cards. I have searched hundreds and still have not found the answer to my problem. I am trying to install my ATI Radeon 7000/ve card. I was using this article http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...icle&artid=212 and it was very useful except for the one problem I keep having.

When I run make.sh everything is fine but when I run make_install.sh I keep getting this output.

- creating symlink
- recreating module dependency list
- trying a sample load of the kernel module
Warning: loading /lib/modules/2.4.29/kernel/drivers/char/drm/fglrx.o will taint the kernel: non-GPL license - Proprietary. (C) 2002 - ATI Technologies, Starnberg, GERMANY
See http://www.tux.org/lkml/#export-tainted for information about tainted modules

You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg

/lib/modules/2.4.29/kernel/drivers/char/drm/fglrx.o: insmod fglrx failed
failed.

For those who would like to know my system info. I am using Slackware 10.1 with the 2.4.29 Kernel.

My /sbin/lspci output is this.

Try using the kernel radeon driver - see if it gives a similar error. If the kernel driver gives the same "No such device" error, then your card isn't a "real" radeon card, contrary to what lspci says.

hi , nymusicman ,

almost same with me.

everything goes fine till, ./make_install.sh command

my system info as following...

AMD 64 3000+

MSI (Micro Star International) Motherboard with " ATI Radeon XPress 200G " Graphics Card on Board.

2 GB Kingston RAM

OS : - SuSE 9.3 Professional x86_64

i also have read hundered threads.

TRAGEDY IS ONE THREAD IS SAYING ONE THING, SECOND THREAD IS SAYING SOMETHING.

INSTALING ATI DRIVER IS NOT A CHILD'S PLAY, YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE A NUMBER OF THINGS BEFORE YOU ACTUALLY INSTALL IT.

EVEN ATI Inc. ITSELF IS NOT SURE THAT BY INSTALLING THEIR DRIVER FILE(s) MAKE GRAPHICS CARD WORK OR NOT.

ANY WAY, GOOD TO YOU.

BUT I GIVE UP, AFTER STRUGGING FOR ONE MONTH ULTIMATELLY. I STOP USING LINUX AND HAD TO TURN TO WINDOWS AGAIN.

- REGARDS.

Ehm, the fglrx-driver only supports Radeon 8500 or higher... You better use the free radeon driver.

You don't need any kernel driver actually. You simply have to edit your XF86Config-4 (or xorg.conf) and replace your current display driver with "radeon". You DO need a kernel driver if you want to use DRI (Direct Rendering Infrastructure).

On this computer I have a Radeon with fglrx. Whenever I need the "radeon" driver, I simply change

Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Graphics Adapter"
Driver "fglrx"

...

Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Graphics Adapter"
Driver "radeon"

...

As you have not managed to install "fglrx" drivers then you wont find "fglrx" anywhere, but something else, maybe "fb" or "vesa".

Ok, forgot to mention that rather than editing the XF86Config-4 directly use your distributions own X configuration mechanism if possible. I have not used Slackware so I don't know if there is one in it.

No, Slackware does not have a video editor. But if you could give me a few more intructions on how to setup using dri I'd really appreciate that. BTW, slackware 10.1 uses Xorg-6.8.1.
