Problem reading/writing SD card from Compaq iPAQ PPC

Hi,

I bought an old iPAQ (Compaq 3800) on ebay, with the intention of using it as portable photo gallery, so that I could show my relatives pictures from my digital camera without having to lug aroung my laptop.

The idea was that I would copy the pics from my HD to an SD card, then plug the SD card into the iPAQ.

But...

I can write to the SD card OK with my USB card R/W, but when I put it in the iPAQ, nothing shows up. Similarly, when I write files from the iPAQ on to the card, they don't show up on my main machine. It's like there's two different file systems on the card, but each machine can only read its own one. They do notice the space taken up by the files written by the other machine when I check the free space, but the files themselves seem invisible.

Here's the appropriate part of fstab:

none /mnt/removable supermount dev=/dev/scsi/host1/bus0/target0/lun0/part1,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-15,kudzu,codepage=850 0 0

I don't have this problem when I use the card reader to read/write with SM cards. It works OK with MMC cards for my Nokia phone too, though when I try an MMC card in the iPAQ it's the same story as with the SD card.

I'm guessing that it must be something to do with the formatting. I'd appreciate any advice.

Thanks,

Andrew Gray

Smile Problem solved

Well, I worked out the answer myself, and it had nothing (much) to do with formatting.

I reformatted the SD card in my iPaq, which had the result that it wasn't mounting automatically on my main machine at all. (Usually, when I plug an SM or MMC card into my card writer it mounts automatically, using supermount I presume).

So I tried mounting it manually, and, guess what, it worked.

I've inserted this line into fstab:

/dev/sda /mnt/sdcard vfat rw,user,noauto 0 0

so now I just plug in the card, type in:

mount /mnt/sdcard

and it's showtime.

I'd still like to know why it doesn't work automatically though.
