problem adding kernel modules on bootup

I'm trying to install SuSE 9.1 from the personal version ISO image onto a Gateway E-5400. The machine has dual 733 MHz processors, 1 Gb RAM, IBM DYS-T18350 SCSI hard drive, Adaptec 29160N SCSI adapter, onboard Intel ethernet.

I have found that I must load the aic7xxx_old module to get the hard drive to be recognized. I am also having to load the e100 module to get the networking up. I have tried adding both aic7xxx_old and e100 to MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT (aic7xxx_old is also in the INITRD_MODULES list) in /etc/sysconfig/kernel, but the system hangs at the "Setting up network interfaces" section of the boot process. Adding these on the boot options line (e.g. INSMOD=e100) does not seem to help.

I can sucessfully boot the system by booting to the installation CD, choosing "Manual Installation" with "INSMOD=aic7xxx_old INSMOD=e100" on the boot options line. I then choose "Boot Installed System", and the system will boot sucessfully. This is fine for debugging but not really a workable solution for the long term.

Thanks in advance for any guidance you may offer!

Hi irmark

You'll have to get a kernel with the scsi controller and disk modules compiled in in order for the kernel to be able to use the scsi disk.
