Plugging in USB freezes my Fedora 13 64-bit, intermittently

If I plugin a USB drive (external hard drivee) into my running Fedora 13 64-bit system - it occassionally freezes up. This behavior is intermittent
I could not trace it to any /var/log/messages yet.
Any suggestions on where/how I proceed to diagnose this?

Hi,

Try the same usb drive in any other system and see if the other system freezes.

Other work around would be

Restart Hardware/USB:

Quote:
/etc/init.d/udev restart
rmmod ehci_hcd
modprobe ehci_hcd
The problem could be also due to failing/losing power PSU.

Hope this helps you

Thanks for the reply.
It's not a problem with the USB - I have tried a few different ones (each one of them working perfectly on other systems).
When the whole machine freezes, I have no way of running those commands, you mention. Only way out has been hard boot the system - even the alternate consoles seem inaccessible (ctrl+alt+f2,f3 etc.etc.)

If you know the IP address of the system and if its in the network can you ssh it and see top to know the processes running in the background
