I am thinking of getting a DVD±RW drive now the prices are getting reasonable. I have seen the Pioneer DVD±RW for under £110 and wonder if anyone has one and if it works in Linux. Will I still get away with Supermount?

I don't have a Pioneer, but I always found LiteOn cdrws to be superb, so I bought a LDW411S - 4 speed, + and -, 40 speed CDR, 24 speed CDRW. £84 plus vat at my local PC store - also on Ebuyer.com, now.
Works like a charm under Mandrake 9.2, supermount enabled, using XCDRoast, at the moment, but the latest version of K3B also looks very good.

Thanks guys. Someone in work warned me off the NEC, and he's a Windows user. I've read posts here and at MandrakeUsers about compatibility problems with Linux/Supermount regarding a Sony model.
I've seen the 106 for under £110 (but it's more like £180 at PC World - I only browse in there and buy paper wheh it's on offer).

i don't use supermount with mine. I should have said so in the earlier post.
but it does work fine with, cdrecord, dvdrecord, and digital audio extraction.
I'm in the middle of orientating on buying an internal dvd writer, but can'y find out what's the right choice. I'm using Redhat 9.0 and got a reasonable fast machine.
Does anybody know if the LiteOn LDW-811S is a good choice? Does anybody knows if it works witgh RedHat 9.0?

this is a comment about the pioneer dvr-106.
i've bought 2 different kinds of cheap dvd blanks, and neither were in
the drive's table, so it would only burn at 1x. sux ass. i updated the
firmware to the newest version. same thing.
Ive had good luck with lite-on drives; both of mine have worked perfectly (and with supermount) in mandrake 9-9.2. The lite-on cd burner I had worked fine in redhat 8 when I was using that, but I didn't have the dvd burner at the time. I have talked to people who have had problems with pioneer drives, but I've never owned one so I can't say. Personally, I would go with lite-on (as I already went into on another post just a min ago)

I have the LDW811S - 8 speed Works great under k3b.....
Mihai Maties put together some K3b 0.10.2 Red Hat 9 packages (he also has cvs builds). These rpms are also available via two yum & apt repositories so we recommend you to use them instead of direct downloading the packages. To learn how to configure your system to use yum or apt for easy updating and resolving dependencies please check: Yum home page , Yum HOWTO , Apt home page , Apt HOWTO .
You can add the following lines to the configuration files:
* yum - /etc/yum.conf
[xcyb-stable]
name=Red Hat Linux 9 ( xcyborg / stable )
baseurl=http://rpms.xcyb.org/redhat/9/stable/
[xcyb-bleeding]
